In 1885 Edward
Jackson planned an ophthalmoscope for students of ophthalmology and the
general practitioner. He felt ophthalmologists paid too much attention to
complicated, expensive ophthalmoscopes. Instead of the lens disc he used
two small slides which were moved vertically behind the Loring tilt
mirror. A thin protective disc is mounted behind the slides. One slide
contains lenses plus 1,2,3,4,5 diopters. The other lenses plus 6 and minus
.5,6,12,18 diopters. There are 35 combinations possible from plus 11 to
minus 18 diopters. It was manufactured by James W. Queen & Co.,
Philadelphia. In 1887 he described a model in which the slides contained
plus 1,2,3,4,10 diopters and minus 0.5,2.5,5,19,25 diopters . The lens
diameter is 5 mm. This one has an ivory handle and some deterioration of the silvering on the mirror. |
