Morton's
ophthalmoscope |
The ophthalmologist, Edmund Landolt pointed out that Morton’s ophthalmoscope was in the Curry and Paxton pricelist in London in 1883. Morton described his model to the Ophthalmological Society of the United Kingdom in January 1885. Morton used the lens arrangement that another ophthalmologist, John Couper, had reported in 1883. Twenty-nine lenses are arranged in a closed chain of lenses. A gear wheel is used to rotate them into position. There are twelve convex lenses and seventeen concave ones. There is also a disc, which has an empty opening and the lenses of plus 0.50 and 20 as well as minus 10 and 30 diopters. Most models have a large weak concave mirror and a large plano mirror, which can be flipped to make a selection. There is also a small angled concave mirror with a short focus distance. |
